Prison often reminds me of high school, and not just because of the cliques, the drama, the emphasis on reputation, etc. Also because of the one-size-fits-all programs and the way everyone is crammed into them. We’re often treated like children. Now, there is something to be said that the average convicts ACTS like an adolescent and thus deserves to be treated like one. But there are those of us who are a little more advanced in our thinking, those of us who have spent our time productively and don’t need to be brought down to the lowest common denominator. And I wish they would recognize this and, if not reward us, at least acknowledge it and leave us alone. A futile hope, maybe, but it is what it is.
