Second Chances by William Isaac

Share

The month of April was declared “Second Chance” month by President Biden. We are taught at an early age to make a good first impression as you may not get a second chance.

As many of us “people in custody” can attest, we often wonder if we will get a second chance in society. Previous societal norms have shunned felons from housing, well-paying jobs, and even relationships with family and friends.

Employment has changed as companies are finding it hard to hire workers who are willing to work. Fortune 500 companies have become more willing to hire a former inmate.

Getting a “second chance” with family or significant others can be a huge hurdle for most inmates. While some family members keep in contact with an inmate, others have turned their backs on their loved ones. What adds to this travesty is that many in society were taught to forgive those who have “trespassed” against us. Now, I am not saying that all crimes that were committed are forgivable, but many crimes are. Many prisoners seek that “second chance” to repair their relationship. All they really need is an opportunity to prove themselves.

For those people who are part of any pen pal group, I applaud you in giving many inmates a second chance in building new friendships and sometimes a special relationship. You all give us hope and a light from the despair which we have put ourselves in.

April is Second Chance Month, as I stated earlier. If you haven’t reached out to an inmate, please do so. Your gesture will go a long way in helping that inmate enjoy that “second chance.”

Til next time. Live Long and Prosper! Peace and Long Life! Comments? Reach out.
