Every weekend morning when I do my studying in the common room, I bring down a book about atheism, rational thought, a critique of the Bible, something similar, to try to provoke discussion. And I’m consistently amazed by how many guys have just never been exposed to this type of stuff. Many of them are amazed that there are cogent, intelligent books that challenge their religion, that give alternatives to religious morality. It’s new to them. That’s no surprise, I suppose. But it also gives one easy idea for trying to push my notion of less religion and more rational thought: exposure. We need more books and educational material in prison, which is generally awash with religious material and little else.
