I disagree with religious people, but some of them I can’t even understand. Some of them, especially in prison, don’t ever want to hear anything that might challenge or throw doubt on their positions. I think this is a profoundly dangerous attitude to have. We should question everything, ESPECIALLY our most cherished beliefs and things we have believed for a long time. That is exactly how I changed my life, by criticizing myself and understanding the mistakes I made and why I made them. Religious blindness is no better than any kind of other self-induced blindness–particularly in prison where a lot of guys just use religion as a device, hoping that it will make them different.
