Everybody claims to “find God” in prison. For me, it was the opposite. I was a religious child and came to prison at 18 still believing in Jesus Christ and the central tenets of the Bible. A dedication critical thought, reason, and education changed my mind and my entire life. But for the average con reborn in prison, it’s not a real change. They use religion as an affectation while in prison, but when they get out, it’s back to the same old life and habits. They haven’t changed. How could they have? An excuse to be good does not change your thinking habits, doesn’t really change you at all. The proper approach should be to CHANGE oneself, not find a system that makes you feel good and go with it.
