DO WHAT? (part 1), by VERNON BROWN

TAKE OFF YOUR COAT, HAVE A SEAT AND KICK BACK.
CHECK OUT THE SCENE, PART ONE OF THIS ACT.
IT STARTS WHERE A TEN YEAR OLD BOY FROM THE HOOD,
HAD GOALS OF SUCCESS, WORKIN’ AS HARD AS HE COULD.
WHILE POVERTY AND MISERY SURROUNDED HIS HOME,
AND A MOM RAISIN’ HIM AND HIS SISTER ALONE.
DESPITE ALL THE PROBLEMS HE FACED EVERYDAY,
HE ALWAYS GAVE THANKS EVERY TIME HE’D PRAY.
IN SCHOOL, HE STAYED FOCUSED; HIS EYES ON THE PRIZE.
USING EDUCATION AS A DISGUISE.
FOCUSED ON MAKING HIS FUTURE MUCH BRIGHTER,
HE DREAMED THAT ONE DAY HE’D BE A GREAT WRITER.
THE NEIGHBORHOOD BULLY WAS EVERYTHING BUT COOL.
ROBBED THE LITTLE BOY FOR HIS JACKET AND SHOES.
TWO DAYS LATER, THEY FOUND A BOY DEAD.
BEATEN VERY BADLY AND SHOT IN THE HEAD.
A WOMAN ON HER WAY HOME FROM THE STORE,
RECOGNIZED THE JACKET AND SHOES THE BOY WORE.
“OHHHHH, NOT MY BABY!”, SHE SCREAMED AND SHE CRIED.
DROPPED TO HER KNEES, KNEELED BY HIS SIDE.
CARESSED HIS LITTLE FACE, THEN BECAME STUNNED.
THE BOY ON THE GROUND, DEAD…WASN’T HER SON.

Part 2 coming soon.
