A Plea for Help by Ke’Aira Hampton

To whom it may concern:

On March 06, 2018, I was up for parole until, unfortunately additional charges of Felony murder and Armed Robbery were presented. Because of this, I was unable to be released into society due to the severity of the charges. I have been incarcerated since the age of seventeen, preparing for release at 26, only to be denied parole because of these additional charges. Having to fight a Felony Murder and Armed Robbery case was a very terrifying experience to say the least. My family and I immediately sought legal counsel to prove my innocence. After reviewing discovery documents my representative felt confident that my innocence would be proven.

Months later and after delayed court proceedings, denied motions, and having a co-defendant who was the alleged shooter, as well as the prosecutors bringing up my past criminal background, my representative lost confidence in my case. My representative even went as far as stating, “You would be leaving out of prison with a toe tag”. Preparing myself for the unknown but trusting my legal counsel, I was advised that the best thing to do was take a no contest please fast so that I would avoid any harsher penalties.

On November 13,2028, being tried separately from my co-defendant, a No contest plea for Second Degree Murder was entered on my behalf. I received a sentence of 18 ½ to 50 years. The armed robbery charge was dropped due to the statue of limitations. The alleged crime took place in 2010, and chargers weren’t brought forward until 2018.

In 2020 I was honored to go back to the trial court for ineffective counsel. My then former legal representative was subpoenaed and would get time credited which would have taken seven years from the 18 ½ year sentence. But that wasn’t the case. My time was run consecutive. Oral arguments went back and forth between my new legal representative and the prosecutor.

I was scheduled for another hearing date but then the COVID pandemic hit. That put the case on hold. However, that same year, my codefendant went to trial and was found not guilty during a jury trial.

It is now 2024 and I have yet any answers. I’m here to be the voice. The way the justice system is set up is designed to fail you, break you, and misuse you. The system lacks in finding facts as well as data to back up its claims. It is so easy to be thrown behind bars but so hard to make it out. I’m here to say and claim that U won’t stop fighting until my innocence is heard and my chains are broken. I am reaching out today and would like to raise awareness behind my story in hopes of the cycle of injustice be broken for once. Any type of assistance towards my case would be very helpful.

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance. I hope to hear back soon.

Respectfully Submitted,
