Grow Up by Todd L. Cook

Share

I’ve come to realize that young people are stupid. Not everyone, obviously, and not you (if you’re reading this it proves you’re willing to learn). But a lot of people just don’t get it. They walk through life with their heads in the clouds (nice way of saying it) and they seem to miss the bigger picture. Some have a sense of entitlement. Some are arrogant. Some have a criminal mind, and others just don’t care.

True, the vast majority mature appropriately, love their family and do the best they can. Yet, it seems that stupid juice is sold in stores (probably on Amazon). Or is there something else going on that explains why so many are making poor decisions, especially when they’re young?

To help us better understand why this might be, the Center for Law, Brain & Behavior, at Massachusetts General Hospital, has created a website to demonstrate that it isn’t that young people are stupid, it’s that their brains haven’t fully developed.

The facts are in, until the age of 25 (or later given trauma, substance abuse, or brain injury) humans aren’t playing with a full deck. This is not something we can control. It takes time to grow up. As such, I think it’s vitally important that we take a look at this website (clbbneurolawlibrary.com) to learn more about the brain science behind the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Miller v Alabama (bans mandatory life without parole for juveniles). In doing so, we may just learn why the principles of Miller must be extended to youthful offenders above the age of 18. Go to the website and tell me what you think at toddlcook2.0@gmail.com.
