Donald Trump: The Man Who Can Not Lie? by Vaughn Washington

Donald Trump portrays himself to be a Christian. He has tried to quote the Scriptures and stood before crowds with the Bible in his hand. The Evangelical community has long since accepted him as one of their own, and now, he is actually selling Bibles on television. Indeed, he is actually worshipped among some sects of Evangelicals and has been put on the same footing as Jesus Christ by these fundamentalists who claim to adhere to the basic principles of the Gospel.

How so, you may ask? Well, at the Family Leadership Summit in July of 2015, Trump was asked if he ever asked God for forgiveness. Trump responded, “I am not sure I have, I just go and try to do a better job from there, I don’t think so. I think, if I do something wrong, I think I just try to make it right, I don’t bring God into that picture, I don’t.”

Now, if I am reading my bible right the only other person that did not have to ask God for forgiveness was Jesus Christ; maybe, Mary the mother of Jesus, if you are Catholic, and believe in the Immaculate Conception. But Donald Trump has managed to make himself a Messiah at the most, and a saint at the least, in many of these Evangelicals’ eyes. Donald Trump has been accused of countless crimes and indiscretions and his answer to them all is: “I did nothing wrong, I did absolutely nothing wrong, that was a perfect phone call, I did nothing wrong, etc.” Everybody or anybody that says he is lying, according to Trump, are the liars. The truth can only come out of his mouth. It used to be accepted meme that all politicians lie. Not anymore. As far as the Evangelicals are concerned, Trump cannot tell a lie. White Anglo-Saxon protestants who mostly make up the Evangelicals are prone to creating myths of purity about their leaders. Remember how we learned in Grade School that George Washington confessed to chopping down the cherry tree. “I cannot tell a lie,” we were told that he said, and remember that Abraham Lincoln was called honest Abe.” Maybe these men were the epitome of integrity, but they were not without sin, nor is Donald Trump no matter how many times he says, “I have done nothing wrong.”
