The Nebraska Legislature is currently in a special session charged with the duty of passing meaningful property tax relief. One bill that was introduced caught my attention – LB 25 (Special Session 2024). It has to be one of the smartest pieces of legislation I’ve ever seen. Senator Terrell McKinney has introduced the concept of providing rehabilitated incarcerated individuals with a second chance, or release from parole, if both the Board of Parole and the Board of Pardons agree that the person has earned it. Brilliant!
You may ask how that helps with property tax relief. Well, that is the beauty of it. The quantifiable cost savings generated through releasing individuals once they are rehabilitated goes to the Property Tax Credit Cash Fund every year. What a smart bill!
After all, why would you as a taxpayer want to pay to keep someone in prison if they have proven themselves safe to reenter society? That’s bad budgeting when people are losing their homes because they can’t pay their property taxes. This is responsible legislation that needs to pass. Contact your local senator and tell them you support LB 25 (Special Session 2024).
