Making a Phone Call Using My Tablet by James Carlson

Share

I am making a phone call using my tablet, and wanted to know what it’s like being my first call using my tablet. So, how are you? Well, Ellen is not. Hello! Hello! Are you there? Can you hear me?

Securus, is the service provider of our tablets that were issued in December 2020. Their reputation and service sucks. WiFi always goes out here, take days to get back on, and getting a workable tablet is nonexistent. I had my tablet for years (and took care of it) and due to dead spots and an un-rechargeable battery I requested a replacement. Months went by and my tablet could only function while the charger was plugged in. Finally, my replacement got here. The tablet porter helped me to make it my own, which by this point I was excited about. As I pushed the app to type and send an eMessage to my surrogate family the app would not open up. I tried my commissary app, and it would not open up, I tried the Media Store, and it didn’t open up. None of the apps would work. So, I went back to the tablet porter, and said, “What the hell!” He said to wait and he will have the Securus representative resynchronize it. When it got resynchronized, it still doesn’t work. Heart breaking!

A fellow inmate went to accessories, in the TalkBack feature, and removed the apps one at a time, and they came back. So, I’m able to send and receive eMessages, order store, access Securus non support, media store, and download my music and games. However, I can never shut off my tablet or restart it. If I do, I lose all access of opening my apps and a Wallpaper, widgets, and setting green box appears, and slowly shows my apps, but they will not open up.
The tablet porter told me he’ll try and get another one, but that was weeks ago. The tablet didn’t work from day one and the Securus representative knew it. My surrogate family called Securus and the representative told him, “What do you want me to do about it?” He asked for a name of a person who he could contact, but the representative hung up on him. That’s Securus customer service that we are used to.

Now, they are taking over our phone service. IC Solutions will not be renewing the phone service contact. The warden here told us to use all money on the phone account or lose it. Families have phone debit accounts with hundreds of dollars and fellow prisoners as well. But, no sign of refunds. The only information we got is, we get two free phone calls a week, any calls after that is $0.06 a minute. And, Securus supplied a video on how to use the tablet to make a call on the FYI app. Also, we got earbuds with a microphone so we can talk on the phone that are the cheapest things that I have ever seen, and the part that holds the microphone in is the size of a Lipitor pill.

So, by the end of this month, our regular telephones that you call relics from the 1990’s, will be gone. Our families and friends will soon experience the phone service that Securus has to offer. No more waiting in line for a phone, because they’re not here.
