How I Start My Day in Prison by Patrick Irving

Share

I’ve been using the JPay messaging system to create less than 30 second videos that show slices of my life in prison. These videos augment my work as a journalist in ways that the written word struggles to communicate. Here’s one example, more of which can be found on my Youtube channel…

Between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. is the most optimal time for me to read and write on my unit. Others in my unit are mostly supportive and respectful of my study and work activities, but they also get bored throughout the day, and this leads to disruptions.

The keyboard costs $19.99 plus tax. The JPay tablet for Idaho prisons (JP6) costs $99.99 plus tax. It doesn’t have a word processor so nearly everything I write and publish is done through the messaging app. E-stamps, used for electronic messaging, range from $.30 to $.40 each depending on the amount purchased. The varying cost of games, movies and music adds up quickly. I stay away from movies and games but rely heavily on music for therapy.

The book, “A Prison Writer’s Guide to Media Writing,” by Yukari Kane and Shaheen Pasha, came as a gift/instructional guide from the Prison Journalism Project, a nonprofit organization to which I proudly contribute my writing.
