Fellow underdogs, we have come to a point in this journey of life where sharing our stories of perseverance has power. It’s our duty to each other to put those passages of purpose into words for the world to see. We are not the worst things we have ever done. We are not worthless. As a matter of fact, we are worth more now because we’ve had to endure the discounting of our characters by those who choose to sit in judgment. What if everyone was forced to share the worst things they have ever done each time they meet someone new? What if you were judged by the lowest point in your life everyday?
If you’re like the millions of people residing in, or coming out of prison, you’ll have to do just that. Every time you apply for a job, seek housing, or ask for credit, you’ll have to share your darkest moments. For those of us in that situation, compassion is lacking. So too is understanding, consideration, or forgiveness.
As a result, I believe it is our duty to change the narrative. To get ahead of the labels that have been placed on us by first changing our lives, and then by demonstrating that our mistakes do not define us. In an effort to lead the charge on this path to redemption, I’ve written Lessons Learned: From Playground to Penitentiary; and Convict Logic: From Leadership to a Better Life. We can overcome adversities. We just need to stick together. Are you with me?
