As an individual in custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections who’s sentenced to 8 years at 85%, Truth In-Sentencing is a big deal. The Truth In-Sentencing initiative is about giving prisoners opportunity to not only change their lives while incarcerated but possibly make it home to their families early.
I thought the whole point of prison was for rehabilitation. But the way some of the prisons, laws, and restrictions are will make you think otherwise. I’m not sure about other states and the rest of the world, but here in Illinois, things need to change. Some people are offered better opportunities than others depending on whether you’re sentenced at 50%, 75%, 85%, or 100%. If you’re sentenced to only have to complete 50% or 75% of your sentence, you may also earn additional time off your sentence for work and programs. At 85% or 100% under the current laws, you cannot earn ANY good time credits at all. Not only that but it’s hard to even get a job or get into programming.
There is hope for all in this predicament or with family in prison. Especially here in Illinois with House Bills 5219 and 3901. These bills are being introduced to try and level the field and give all in Illinois prisons similar opportunities. 5219 to my understanding, through my research, if passed will give everyone day-for-day good time. 3901 is going to allow those at 85 or 100% to earn 15% off their sentences. So, if you see any petitions or anything online please show your support. I hope other states are also making positive changes in the justice system to rehabilitate their incarcerated individuals.
We all make mistakes in life, big or small. We should all be given ample opportunity to better ourselves and have the same right to earn goodtime as others are. It only makes sense!
