Bars and Blessings: Turning a Mess into a Message by Robert Shafer

Share

Introduction:
My name is Robert Shafer, my friends call me Bob. I’m 54, single (once divorced), with an adult (36) son. I reside at the Potosi Correctional Center in Missouri, under a sentence of life without parole (LWoP).

On Monday April 30, 1990, 34 years ago, I was rescued. From what? Myself. This journey isn’t a unique one; it is, however, not an ordinary one. I stand accountable and responsible for my actions, though it wasn’t always this way. You see, I did commit the murders of Mr. Ford Jerry Parker and Mr. Keith Dennis Young, this is what I did, this is NOT who I am.

I have an interesting story to share, one replete with all sorts of things that may cause you sadness, but at the same time I believe that ultimately you’ll see what I see, no matter how much it rains, no matter how dark the clouds, the sun returns bringing new life and hope. My life has been a mess, going back to my early years, most of it through my own doing. I’m NOT a victim, I’m a messenger.

I’m working hard to turn my mess into a message. I’ve learned that life isn’t necessarily about what they take away that counts, life is about what you do with what you have left. I’m NOT perfect, I’m better than I was yesterday, not as good as I hope to be tomorrow. I’m a work in progress, each day is a new opportunity to do better and be better. So, I hope you’ll join me on this part of my journey. I’m behind bars and still I’m blessed beyond words.

  1. Taking responsibility for your actions is the path to redemption! I do not envy the path you are on but I would agree you are better today than yesterday. You most certainly are on target for being even better tomorrow than you were today. Stay positive!!

  2. Posted from a reader who sent an email message to me. “ Bob, your message was very meaningful to me. Not only was it very well written, but it also changed my stereotypical impression of what a Texas inmate’s life must be like. You have a finely developed sense of morality, responsibility and kindness. I wish more people on the outside could develop as thoughtfully and maturely. Your friend Jay speaks admiringly of you often.

    Blessings to you, Bob

    (Rev.) Jim Robertson”
