Part 2
Doctor Johnson was a thirty eight year old young black scientist that worked at the CCD doing research and finding cures for diseases. He sat in his white polished lab with the lights dimmed to a smoothing setting, with his iPod playing a mixture of slow jams of his favorite R&B songs as he danced and sung along while at the same time inserting a test tub to run it through its final test before being passed for human trial.
After multiple failed attempts he was quite positive that this time would be different. That they finally came up with the right serum that would destroy this killer disease once and for all. Yes, this time would be different; It just had to be. Because all the other failed attempts was draining him of the little confidence he had left, he thought to himself as he scratched his graying beard and thought of past unanswered questions that he had had, as in: What was he doing wrong? What was he not seeing? How could so many reactions go so wrong? It was these unanswered questions that had him starting to second guess his own intelligence as well as all of his past achievements.
He was a young scientists whom finished at the top of his class. He received his master degree at the age of twenty four from a very prestige black college. He was not only well intelligent, but driven as well. He had a drive that came from a very dark place of pain and heartache.
He watched as his brother lost his life to the same disease in which he was struggling to find a cure. A disease that did not show no favoritism to no man, woman, nor child. Nor did it show mercy to any of its victims, and when it came it left behind a horrific story that effected any and everyone in its path. Rather it was a story of the tremendous will power it took to overcome the horrendous disease, or a story of a life cut way too short and too soon. Either way it had a way of creeping into people’s lifes and affecting it in a way that was unexplainable. It was a disease that would push and bring out strength in them that they were unaware that they possed.
The huge white laboratory door swung open, and his lab partner whom was also another young black scientists whom was as equally gifted as him came walking through the door. “So how’s it Going?” Dr. Wes asked as he came into the lab carrying bags of refreshment in his arms and hands, and the remaining he could not carry due to lack of space he used his mouth.
Wes’s presence and the smell of food knocked Doctor Johnson out of his train of thought and brought him back to reality, as he finally took his eyes off of the green digital light that would notify him of its completion; for as of right now it read 33%.
“I’m still waiting for the final results to come back to determined that.” Doctor Johnson said with a trace of anxiety following his words which shined light on his uncertainty and doubt he was having, and Dr. Wes picked up on it immediately.
“Don’t worry this moment right here is what our hard work is all for. Not for the money, not for the awards and praises, and not for the fame, but to save lifes. As along as we give it all we got, we will accomplish great heights and hopefully pervent any other person from going through what we both had to go through.” Dr. Wes said while carefully placing the refreshments on the black marble counter top.
Just like Dr. Johnson he too lost a love one to the deadly disease that claim so many with no remorse.
“Just think of how many lifes we will be saving. The normalcy we will be restoring. Normalcy some people haven’t been fortuned enough to experience.” Dr. Johnson said as he zoned into his own thoughts just considering all of the endless possibilities the future would hold if their cure would prove to be successful. “I think about my mother almost every night. ‘Had…..” Dr. Wes was forced to stop in order to prevent his emotions from spurring out of control before he continued. “Had this disease known her. Had it known the person she was. Had it known she was caring, loving, given and a single mother of four children, whom needed her nurturing love that she provided.” Dr. Wes said as he whipped away tears that started to form in the corner of his eyes.
“I know.” Dr. Johnson said as he came over and sat in the lab stool beside him and rubbed Dr. Wes’s shoulder to try to some how comfort him in his time of need to let him know he was not alone. ” I think about my brother as well. He was only twelve years old when this disease claimed him so suddenly. I find myself thinking if only we had……….”Dr. Johnson also had to stop himself from going down the road of regrets and what ifs. His momentarily brief pause allowed him to gather himself together before continuing. ” I’m just glad I didn’t let this disease claim me. Seeing how it so viscously took my brother, when he was so innocent. It could have easily destroyed me as well.”
“What you think the future will be like without it?” Dr. Wes asked as he and Dr. Johnson both looked at the digital green percentage bar that was steady counting up to its completion.
“Promising.’ I think without this disease the future will be promising. Because all this disease do is destroy. It eats you up within. It attacks your heart. your mind. It destroys your blood and it also impairs your vision.” Dr. Johnson said as he thought about all of the symptoms the disease took him through.
Dr. Johnson and Dr. Wes both looked at the capsule containing love, compassion, understanding, patients, time, consideration and forgiveness. Could it be the cure to hatred? Could it be the answer that the world been looking for? Could it mean the end of all wars? Could it be the solution they were both looking and striving for after all these years? They both sat at he edge of their seats with hope in their eyes as they watch as the digital green light signaled its “completion.”
