For Your Good Conscience (A Revised Poem), by Jakob Helleis

Life could be simpler
To see your friends and foes
As either good or bad,
Of benefit or useless

To just slam the gavel,
Hear the echo die
As dirt falls from a shovel
Until a silent reflection

Mirrors the voice
That’s always told you
To make a better choice,
Is ironically ignored.

However deeply buried,
Love speaks.
