Leading By Example Not Instruction (cont), by Alvatina Flucker

This month marks the 51st year of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. We ALL will remember the remarkable example that he set for mankind of every race and community. He set the stage for many remarkable breakthroughs that anyone who wanted or desired to be better, different or influential could take advantage of.

This month also marks a time of celebration for the ones that we LOVE.
As we see and remember things of the past, let us pull together as a county, as a city, as a State, as a Country and as a Nation to NOT let our dreams die, and to grow in the power of love. Love is not a feeling! We often get that messed up, because love is actually an action!!!!!!!

I often cringe at the idea of speaking up or out, because I know that people will always remember what I did and not who I’ve become. Yet, I refuse to NOT take advantage of the opportunity that has been made available to me.

We need to stand for what is morally correct and right. Everyone has a truth that they believe in and will naturally defend when threatened or violated.

However, it is not what we do, but the manner in which we do it. We can live in a world where every single person is different and thrive together on the simple standard of respect………..respect each others differences and agree to disagree at opposing opinions.

Being incarcerated for over 28 years have opened my mind to the reality of LIFE!! 🙂

There are some things that I just did not get until reality set in…….sometimes that’s a little too late.

We must remember a statement that is so very true———WHAT WE AS A PEOPLE ALLOW IN MODERATION TODAY, OUR GENERATION WILL DO IN EXCESS TOMORROW!!!!

The need to be an example that is worthy of following is a dire need in this day and age. We have so many people of influence directing one way but living in opposition of the directions that are given. We MUST be the change that we want to see or need, and that is best done by example NOT by directives. If we want the change, we must first demonstrate that the change is do-able. 🙂

So, many Correctional Officer come in to work angry, bitter, stressed out and most times just down right full of resentment. Whether it’s the circumstances of life, the job, the offenders or the coworkers…….there is a creed to influence and change one life at a time. Most times it can’t be seen or understood, but because “I” am changed, I live the life of change by example so that the ones that are watching me can SEE that it could be done——-NO matter what the circumstances or situations may be.

It is NOT because of “where” I am that I live a changed life, but because of “who” I have become and “what” I stand for, as well as the truth that I know.

One Chaplain said this to me and I’ll NEVER forget it: “If you believe that what you believe is real……then your life will reflect that belief”.

“BELIEVE IN THE CHANGE AND THEN BE THAT CHANGE THAT YOU WANT TO SEE”!!

This month represent equality and love, so theatre stage has been set for us as a people to have the opportunity to act on the change that we need!!!

  1. I did many years inside with this amazing women and can honestly say she has impacted the lives of so many. She is one of the most positive people I have ever met, even inside a prison so full of darkness. I believe in second chances. And none of us, none of us are the same person we were 20 or 30 years ago. None of us.
