Chaos in Virginia, by Douglas Howard

The state of Virginia is in the national if not international headlines. It seems that at least Governor Northam and Atty. Gen. Herring and even the Lt. Governor seem to be facing much consternation from the citizens of the state. Two of Virginia’s leaders have admitted to wrongdoing, which will be the focus if this commentary.
Virginia has a terrible history of racism and slavery going back centuries. Racism is sin and is dealt with by God as is all sin. The insensitivity shown by Northam and Herring during their college years boggles the mind as both admit to being aware, even then, of our sorted history with racism.
However, should we as a people created in the image of God not forgive these men their trespasses as God has forgiven us? Both men have shown contrition due to their actions when they were young; their apologetic demeanor is admirable and should be emulated by those who have sinned equally egregiously. The Word of God says we have all sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. In the model prayer Jesus gave us the Lord says, “and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors”, Matthew 6:12. Jesus goes on to say in verses 14-15 of the same chapter, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, our Heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses”. The Scriptures are clear: we are to forgive as a lifestyle.

If these men were to have painted their faces black today, this would indicate a mindset that would disqualify them for service in their current respective governmental roles. These men have seen the errors of their ways, have apologized, and we should forgive them these youthful lapses of good judgement.
What is genuinely desturbing, however, is Governor Nortgham’s stance on late term abortion. He has indicated in a widely read statement that he would allow a newly born child to die if it was the decision of the parents and the physician collectively. This belief goes beyond reason. That’s not abortion; its infanticide! It is my opinion all abortion is infanticide as the scriptures indicate we were known by God while we were in our mothers womb. John the Baptist became active while he was in his mothers womb, when Mary, pregnant with Jesus, came to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Life begins at conception, a truth indicated throughout scripture. All life is sacred and precious.
Northam’s stance on abortion should disqualify him as governor of the state of Virginia. This is, of course, my opinion which is, I believe, supported by the Holy Bible.
