Since the invention of language, there have been times when certain words are mistranslated, misinterpreted, or misunderstood. As time passes, the common usage of some words slowly changes, so that the original true meaning is lost.
“Evil” is just such a word. Today, the word ‘evil’ brings to mind thoughts of something that is harmful, hate-filled, and destructive. If a person intentionally causes pain, suffering, or death, they are labelled ‘evil’. But this is not the actual definition of ‘evil’ as it is meant by Almighty God.
Consider this: all grass is green (except when it’s yellow) but that does not mean that the definition of the word ‘green’ is supposed to mean grass, or vice-versa. In the same fashion, all evil acts are harmful and destructive, but these words do not accurately encompass exactly what ‘evil’ is. They are simply descriptive of what ‘evil’ does.
‘Evil’ is, at its core, disobedience to God’s perfect Law. Everything else is a byproduct. Every act of disobedience to God is an act of evil, and the negative consequences that come afterward are the result of it, NOT the whole of it. God’s Law says, “Thou shalt not murder”. Therefore, murder is evil, NOT because of the loss of human life, but because of the intentional act of disobedience.
Don’t lose sight of the Truth in a forest of semantics.
