Cure For Distraction by Matthew Epperson

Share

It has been a week since my last blog entry. Blogging stays at the back of my head until the day ends. “I’ll do it tomorrow,” says my tired, worn out brain. A day after getting my words done on Ruse of Discontent, working out, and guitar lessons, I get distracted from coming to the jpay and writing an entry. I have no excuse people. I want to say that I have too much on my plate, but the truth is, I don’t know what to write sometimes. And I’m not one of those suckers who fill my entries with a bunch of non-sense. I want you, the reader, to be entertained or otherwise satisfied after reading my entries. So, I’ve thought this out and I know what I want to say. Some advice.

For all you writers out there who struggle with getting distracted, listen up. You should use the things that distract you as fuel. Let me explain. Every morning I log in my “little black book” (Yes, it is black) but, much like the blog, I’m at a loss for words. When I don’t know what to write, my brain shifts in and out of never ending fantasies, memories, struggles, anxieties, regrets, etc. Then, the thought occured to me: Why am I not scribing these things? So what if they aren’t in order? So what if they have no connection? I am putting mind to paper and my “distractions” have become my muse. Now, you can’t use a distraction for a manuscript or a professional academic letter, but writing those things lead to potential ideas and or creations. Try it. Seriously, it has made my morning routines a joy all over again.

Go see something live!
