Locked up physically but mentally free by: Michael Horton

I never get comfortable or let the time do me.I do the time and every chance I get I make someone’s day better.I interact with people on the outside of these prison walls.I have built many friendships over the 12 years I been locked up.when I look out my window or when I’m on the yard I see the barb wire fence and realize that I’m locked up physically but I’m also free.my body here but my mind is on the other side.I have learned that I have the gift of communication.so I always show that quality and I put it to use bc u never know who might need to hear something.I don’t know who will see the things I blog but I hope to touch someone and I hope I can make someone smile or feel better from reading what I have to say.I will blog about things I go through.I am a real person who is authentic so my blogs will be real not made up or exaggerated.I hope I’m doing this right.just being me and the name of my titles come from what I am feeling at that moment I want to blog.I see how the staff in this prison want us to be down and be miserable.they say prison is to rehabilitate but its not.we are treated like we are animals instead of human beings.I don’t let it get to me.I challenge myself and educate myself to.I put in the work to be a better man and I rehabilitate myself. I am mentally strong and I make the best out of each day.I take each day one day at a time and I always do my best to make people I come in contact with to feel appreciated and to know they always have a friend in me.life is to short to always live in stress or unhappiness.we all need someone we can count on to be there know matter the situation good or bad right or wrong.so even though I’m locked up I am free and I thank God for giving me the qualities I have.

  1. God Bless you Michael. Keep your good attitude, and thinking of others, and you will have a positive future in your life.
This is the first blog of yours I have seen, keep up the good writing.

  2. I just discovered the inmate blogger platform and posts are coming through my reader. This is the first one of yours I’ve read. I appreciate your willingness to share your experience of life, recognizing the physical barriers that keep you contained while knowing your thoughts and creativity have freedom. I’ve been listening to the Ear Hustle podcast, about inmates at San Quentin. I’ve appreciated being given a view “of the inside” most of us don’t get and I’ve also appreciated how amazingly open a lot of the guys are. Raw. Vulnerable. Sensitive. Senses of humor. Often inspiring. I sense that same possibility here. Thank you.

  3. Michael, Ghandi said “You can judge a society by how they treat their weakest members.” ; and Mandela said, “for to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others”.
As a lawyer he not only supported those of his fellow inmates, but also the guards who could not afford lawyers.
True freedom is always within you, it’s what you do with it that counts.
God sometimes is hard to hear, so we have to do things which will get his attention, so he speaks louder to us. Make them good things.
As always, God Bless you and keep you.
