There are some very powerful and inspirational women in my life and I’d like to thank you all on this #International Day of Women.
My mother, Bonnie, who is my encourager and number one fan. My sister, Bizzy, who pulls the weight of 4 including herself and always seems to be happy. Marianna, who had made my brother whole and who has been a blessing to him. Carolina, who has overcome adversity and, Lord willing, is going to be expecting soon ;). Kelley Beckner, who my first book, A Splendid Compromise, will be dedicated to, and who’s editorial skills and guidance have pruned me into the writer I am today. (Still need plenty of work) May God bless you all and may you all feel loved forever and always.
Now, an inspirational woman outside of my life: Caitlyn Smith (Really hope I spelled that correctly) Last night on #World Cafe I heard this beautiful voice along with an encouraging story of a musician who never gave up on her calling and through 15 years of struggling in Nashville, TN, she finally got signed with Momentum Records. She wrote songs for several artists before making her own way. One in particular was Tacoma sung by Garth Brooks. Ann Powers, the Nashville correspondent for World Cafe, interviewed her between live recording sessions and got a glimpse of this Minnesota native as she delved into her musical history. From her early teens, Caitlyn was writing music and playing in an indie band around St. Paul, Minnesota, grabbing the attention of a small following. At the age of 18, she moved to Nashville and her parents asked her if she would like to take her college tuition to fund her first record. She indubitably said yes and launched into her future. Caitlyn played in bars for 4 years on lower Broadway during lunch hours where there might be 1 or 2 people having fish and shrimps. She has since repaid her parents and is beginning another journey in the ever changing musical industry. Thank you, Caitlyn, for your bravery and audacity. One day I look forward to you hearing some of my music as well.
