Run away thoughts By Tommy Stofanik

I have a hard time dealing with everything here in prison. Everthing from work to sleeping arangments all the way to how this place works..
How can people treat one another like they’re animals. Like we are nothing they dont give any credit where credit is due.. Its funny’ i do have a poem you might say, that is by a judge who believes the same thing… This is what it says:

We want them to be responsible,
So we take away their responsibilities.
We want them to be apart of our community,
So we isolate them from our community.
We want them to be positive & constructive,
So we degrade them & make them useless.
We want them to be trustworthy,
So we put them where there is no trust.
We want them to be nonviolent,
So we put them where there is violence
all around them.
We want them to be kind & loving people,
So we suject them to hatred & cruelty.
We want them to quit being the tought group,
So we put them where the tought guy is respected.
We want them to quit hanging around losers,
So we put all the losers in the state under one roof.
We want them to quit exploiting us,
So we put them where they are exploited.
We want them to take control of there lives,
Own their problems & quit being a parasite,
So we make them totally dependent on us.

  1. The judge forgot a last line in that poem. “But mostly, we want them away from us. Because we don’t know how to do any of the above.” Prison has always been a way to handle a problem we don’t want to handle. Fixing people is hard so we put them away instead. Having said that though, there are people who have no desire to be fixed. My guess is if you have spent time in prison you have met them. What do we do with them?

  2. Wow, true words. And then when the sentence is over, inmates and thrown out into the real world (which may be totally different if you’ve been away a long time) and wonder why they re-offend. shaking my head
