The other night there was a fight between two individuals out on the yard. I don’t know what it was about, and that’s not the point of this little rant. The point is: fighting is high entertainment in prison. Rarely does the average prisoner get so excited and have such a great story to tell, than on the day when he witnesses some guy get knocked out or beat bloody. This is a huge part of the environment we need to change in this place. You don’t have to be a pacifist to find violence terrible. And you should definitely try to find other things to be entertainned by than a prison fight. I don’t care if you think someone “deserved” it or whatever; I just think we ought to try to look at things differently. In 99% of the cases in here, fighting is an irrational, childish way of dealing with an issue. It’s not how adults should be behaving, and it’s not going to help anyone out in the real world.

Very truthful words from this person who is still ‘on the inside’. Cell blocks, showers and ‘the yard, are all dangerous places for the inmates. These realities are ones that the prison system here in America seem to have no real wish to stop it.
I wonder if we are any better on the outside. What are soap operas, celebrity news (always bad/humiliating), sports analysis, politics as run today, etc., but us sitting around entertaining ourselves with the pain, misfortune and failures of others?
