One of the charges I’m always responding to is that, as an atheist, I must be hostile to religion. Well, I’m hostile to some of the things that people do in the name of religion. I’m hostile to the idea shared by many religious people that they should be able to impose their religious rules on others. But in general, it comes down to how religion is used. If you use it to make yourself a better person, to be kind and feel a sense of community, then great. I don’t agree with the method, but I’m fine with the outcome. However, if you use your religion to deny established science, to try to get your creation story taught to kids in public schools, and as an excuse to say that everyone who doesn’t believe like you is going to hell, especially homosexuals, then you’re a child. A moral and intellectual child. Please, join the rest of us in the adult world. It’s great.
