ATHEISM IN PRISON

I was very religious as a child, and even when I came to prison in 1997, at 18 years old, I still believed that Jesus had died for my sins and that the Bible was at least mostly true and the world’s one true moral guide. Some Christians in here are surprised to hear that, when I’m arguing for atheism. They ask how I could have believed these things, and don’t anymore. It’s simple: I believed those things for bad reasons. I believed lots of things for bad reasons when I was younger. Reasons such as authority and emotional attachment. And in the years since, I’ve learned the right reasons to believe something. It’s a relief. It’s wonderful.
